大リーグの試合前をはじめ、多くのスポーツイベントには欠かせない国歌でも、その歌詞を知っている人は少ないようだ。しかも歌詞がわからないアメリカ人は増えて続けている。それどころか「Stars & Stripes Forever（邦題：星条旗よ永遠なれ）」と間違えている人もいる。この状況を危惧したアメリカは、ついにthe National Anthem Projectなるものを先週の木曜日に発足させ、国歌を大々的にＰＲすることにした。学校教育では音楽の時間を使いアメリカ史を学ばせる。
米英戦争（1812年～1814年）の中、1814年9月13日の夜、メリーランド州ボルチモアがイギリス海軍によって陥落すると思われていた。しかし、夜が明けた砦の上には星条旗がはためいていた。感動したFrancis Scott Keyが書いたものが歌詞の由来。
敵の襲撃にも負けず、自由と勇気の地のシンボルで星条旗は、それでも力強くはためいているといった力強い内容である。歌詞は4番まであるが、通常歌われるのは１番のみ。
Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
